The author argues that after 1819 the Grimm Brothers started editing their tales, making them more directed toward children by teaching manners and morals to them. He states that their intentions were to “write for children rather to collect for scholars”. He argues that this editing caused a movement which caused other writers to focus on the didactic tradition. Its purpose is to retain its motifs while providing a new, more appropriate perspective on the fairytales.

Chapter 3: Good vs Evil
The author argues that under normal circumstances, the epitome of a fairytale consists of the moral behind the story. This moral pertaining to the classic case of “good vs evil” and how one who chooses good will end up victorious. Authors and storytellers rely on this “hero effect” where the child creates this bond towards the hero, an admiration, and sees the positive outcome of the hero’s hard work. They are taught to choose sides, good or bad, right or wrong, but never both. The issue arises, once one begins to see it from an adult’s point of view. In real life, one’s choices will not be as easy as choosing right or wrong, there will be times when difficult situations will appear that will both, or none at all, but you will be obliged to choose anyways.

The ability they had of creating characters which whom children can identify and at the same time be able to imitate or follow their values.
